CAMBRIDGE, ON, AUGUST 12, 2022 – A very special vehicle rolled off an assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) today.
The vehicle – a red Lexus NX 350h hybrid electric luxury SUV – was the 10-millionth vehicle produced by TMMC. And it represents yet another significant milestone in the more-than-30-year history of Southern Ontario's automotive industry.
“Today's milestone speaks to how far Toyota's manufacturing operations in Canada have come over the past three decades,” said Frank Voss, President of TMMC. “In 1988, the year we opened our first plant in Cambridge, our team members built 153 Toyota Corollas and it took over 11 years to produce our first million vehicles. Today, we're Canada's largest automaker and leading maker of electrified vehicles, building half a million Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the North American market every year.”
Since 1988, TMMC has also grown to become one of Southwestern Ontario's most important employers, with two production lines in Cambridge and a third line in Woodstock that, together, employ more than 8,500 people.
“Our world-class team members have been trusted to build some of the most popular vehicles in North America, and that's something we're very proud of,” Voss noted. “This year, we added the Lexus NX and Lexus NX Hybrid to our production lines, so it's great to hit our 10 million milestone with a shiny red example of our newest electrified model.”
